Welcome
to the Earls Court computer facilities. All the computers within
Earls court are networked together as a single local area network (LAN)
which is then connected to the Internet. All machines have standard
Office, Internet and Mail capability installed and the default printer for
every computer is the high speed laser printer in the office.
Two
machines additionally have extra facilities installed to allow them to be
them to be used for Administrative purposes. The machine in the centre of
the Office has the Main Mail system installed. It also has a read/write
CD-ROM for large copies and backups. The first machine in the computer
room also has several specialist programs to allow updating of the
Website. These facilities should only be used following training and
detailed instructions for both are found in the administrative section of
this Help.
The
facilities available are for use at any time by ECCP staff, students on
the counselling course and clients of the ECCP facilities (Coffee Bar)
under supervision.
We
do not wish to impose forced constraints on people, so would ask you to
always conform to the following rules when using the computers.
Rules of the Network (Code
of Practice)
-
Internet use is currently taken 'on trust'.
Access to unacceptable sites including those of a violent, sexual or
satanic nature will result in prohibitive steps being taken.
-
When clients are allowed to use the computer
facilities, they should be accompanied by a member of the ECCP team.
-
Whenever you have finished with the computer, please
logoff. This ensures that if the next user of his computer is a client,
they have to logon to the restricted user. If no-one else is going to use
the machine, then please close it down.
-
The machines have been configured to always require a
Logon. ECCP members should logon as user 'Admin', but clients should
Logon as user 'Client'. This restricted user prevents them from
modifying the system in any way, or seeing the ECCP data on the hard disk.
-
Do not install any new software on any machine
without first clearing it with Samy or Mike. This is to ensure
compatibility with the current software, and to ensure we do not have
unlicensed software on our system. This is especially important in the
case of 'free' software from the Web. All 'free' software is paid
for somehow, usually by advertising, but some software can be even more
insidious, creating many unauthorised downloads that need an operating
system re-install to remove.
-
Do not create Folder shares on any of the
computers. These will override user security if not created correctly and
consequently open up the ability for non-administrative users to see
restricted files. ECCP staff do not need any additionally shares.
Administrative shares are available, and are described in the relevant
section of this Help.
-
There is a chart of costs for personal printing. This
is affixed to the printer in the main office.
-
Do
not Use the main Administration machine in the office for sending personal
mail.
-
Never
allow access to or from the web when requested by a firewall prompt,
unless you have cleared what the access request is for.
